Before understanding the difference between a full floating axle and a semi floating axle, you need to understand what is an axle? What is the purpose of an axle? Generally an axle is a central shaft that is used for rotating the wheel or gear. In vehicles, the axle may be fixed to the wheels, rotating with them or fixed to the surroundings. A rear axle, mounted at the rear of the vehicle as indicated by the name, allows the wheels to rotate freely. Used for supporting the weight of the vehicle, it also serves to be a part of drive train that thrusts the vehicle forward.
It is also important whether you need a floater or not. A floating rear axle is used for mounting the wheel to the wheel hubs, whereas a semi floater mounts the wheel to the axle shafts. According to numerous axle parts manufacturer, a semi floating rear axle is more important. The reason behind this is that if you break a floating axle shaft, the vehicle will still continue its motion and can support its weight, but if the semi floating axle shaft is broken then you might end up losing a wheel, which can result in accidents, fatal at times.
